For the past almost 4 months I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my right upper abdomen. I start off the day okay, but throughout the day the pain increases. Some work days I come home and it's so severe that even taking a deep breath is too painful. Although we were fairly certain it was either a muscle or scar tissue problem, the doctor decided to do an ultrasound just to be on the safe side. One look at Caedmon's face and I could tell he was a big boy. At 34 1/2 weeks, he was measuring very large, with an estimate of 7 lbs 1 oz. The doctor wants to do another ultrasound at 38 1/2 weeks if I haven't gone into labor by then. At that point he will decide if he thinks I can safely deliver Caedmon naturally.
I was not happy about this news. Since Graesen was born I have done my own research on child birth and have had my heart set on a natural, epidural-free labor. I had an epidural with Graesen and it didn't work for me. I was still in pain and I was confined to laboring in bed. Graesen was on his cord and we lost his heart rate at one point. After that I was only able to labor on my side otherwise we would lose his heart rate again. I've always wondered if he would have done better if I had been able to labor in different positions. It was a long, hard labor.
When it comes down to it I will do whatever I have to for the safety of the baby, but I'm really hoping to be able to have a natural childbirth. After stressing out about it for a couple days, I decided that I really shouldn't worry about it yet. For one, I had Graesen early. We thought he was going to be bigger than he was, but he came 10 days early and was not overly huge. Also, from everything I've read, late term ultrasounds can be highly inaccurate regarding size. Plus, Caedmon was rolled up in a ball, with his knees in his face, which could not have helped with accurate measurements. I'm sure he's a big boy, but he may not be as big as we think and we really won't know for sure until he is born. He may come on his own before then, or the next ultrasound may show that he's not too big for a safe delivery. Whatever the case, for now I'm just going to continue hoping for a safe, healthy, and hopefully natural delivery. I'll deal with any changes to my "plan" when they are needed, rather than spending the last weeks of this pregnancy worrying about them.
